Overview

DASI formally commenced at the beginning of 2008 and was set the challenge of finding the best way to structure itself to pursue its mission of being a research institute that also comprises a sizeable postgraduate teaching function. DASI is now quite a substantial outfit that marshals the resources of over 50 staff, about half of whom are full time.

An entity of this size requires a degree of management structure to ensure that the operation runs smoothly while being able to pursue strategic objectives. In the first role, Associate Professor David Cropley is responsible for devising and implementing strategies to build our research profile and output. Similarly Dr Timothy Ferris, our Associate Director: Teaching and Learning, is driving the thriving teaching and learning aspects of our operations that account for around half our revenue. The day-to-day management of the team and the direction of our increasing complex operations is the responsibility of Larry Pereira, our Associate Director: Operations. In this role, in addition to the above, Larry takes a leading role in the financial management, contracting, reporting, allocation of accommodation and the balancing of academic workloads between teaching and research.

DASI enjoys a very strong staff profile and this talent is engaged in the management of programs and projects across the institute. Each week the executive advisory group that comprises all the professors, associate professors and leading operations staff, meets to discuss new opportunities, important news and key issues. An impressive gathering that can bring wisdom to inform our important decisions.

External stakeholder input for all academic units within the university comes from industry advisory structures.

The DASI Industry Advisory Board is an exceptional group of men and women chosen from industry, government research labs and the public service. With such influential advice coupled to strong internal leadership, the strategic direction of DASI is in fine shape.
